David August
David has worked in national newspaper sports journalism for two decades, mainly for the Daily Mail but also on a couple of Sunday papers as well. He became interested in it as a career while at university when asked to write for students magazine. He has always had an interest in sport, so after going down the usual route by working for a local paper and news reporting agency, he wrote to a number of sports editors of national newspapers. Luckily, the Daily Mail offered a trial. David also has an interest in horse racing (his grandfather worked for bookmaker William Hill), so when an opportunity arose at the Mail to move to the racing desk he was fortunate to be given the chance. For a brief period he and a colleague wrote a sports betting column for the paper and while he concentrated on football, David looked at other sports. At the time betting on golf was starting to take off and it seemed all so simple when his second wager produced an 80-1 winner (Michael Bradley, 1998 Doral/Ryder Open). Unfortunately, It's been a long hard learning curve ever since.
