About the Indian Premier League

2008 sees the inaugural season on the controversial Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket competition, created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India and featuring some of the biggest names in worldwide cricket.

With the league format agreed and star players from across the world signed up to play, the eight teams of the IPL were auctioned as 10-year franchises to the highest bidders in January 2008. Obscene amounts were spent to secure not only the best teams - the Mumbai Indians franchise was snapped-up for a cool $112m - but the top cricketers were also auctioned to the highest bidders.

Now underway, the competition is combined a league and knock-out format with every team playing each other home and away, with the top four in the final league contesting the semi-finals.

Despite its huge success and popularity, the controversy surrounding the tournament stemmed from the schedule clash with cricketing countries across the globe. No international English cricketers for example are playing in this inaugural season with the ECB refusing to release their players, but these issues have been resolved or avoided with other international boards.

Sub-continent players have no such schedule conflicts with India's Sachin Tendulkar and Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga and Muttiah Muralitharan playing with their governing body's blessing, whilst Australian captain Ricky Ponting and South African captain Graeme Smith have also been allowed to compete and collect their huge pay cheques.

Others have retired from international cricket and therefore avoid any conflicts such as Australians Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath, and South Africans Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis.

The 2008 league runs from 18th April until the final in Mumbai on 1st June.
