The US Open Championship is held each June, scheduled such that the final round is always played on the 3rd Sunday of that month. One of the four major golf championships, the US Open is staged at a variety of courses, usually set up in such a way that low scoring is very difficult and there is a premium on accurate driving.

The
US Open, first staged in 1895, is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the golfing calendar and is the second of the four major championships.
The first
US Open winner was 21 year-old
Horace Rawlins, an English professional who worked at the host course. He received $150 in prize money and a gold medal for the win.
The format has changed many times with the USGA increasing the championship to 72 holes over 2 days in 1898, then in 1926 it was changed to18 holes on the first two days with 36 on the final day. In 1965 there were further amendments to bring the current format of four 18 hole rounds over four days.
The most successful
US Open players in history are Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones and Willie Anderson, who all have 4 titles. Tiger Woods' 2008 victory saw him move up to 3 championships, level with Hale Irwin in second place. The other current players to have won more than one
US Open are Ernie Els (1994 & '97) and Retief Goosen (2001 & '04).
The 2010
US Open will be held at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. It has held the US Open on 4 previous occasions, the last of which came in 2000 when Tiger Woods won his first
US Open title.
