Racing has been staged on York's Knavesmire since 1731 and is undoubtedly one of the most attractive racecourses anywhere in the world.
They only race on the flat with their three day Ebor meeting in August being the main meeting, but in the middle of May their Dante Meeting also attracts plenty of interest with many high class horses racing in recognised Classic trials, pattern races for the older generation and top class handicaps.
Ante post betting markets are always worth keeping a close eye on over the three days with many Classic reputations shattered or enhanced by outcomes here.
Run from Wednesday to Friday in the middle week of May the main races of the Dante Meeting are the Duke of York Stakes, Musidora Stakes, Dante Stakes and the Yorkshire Cup.
The Dante Stakes is probably the best Derby Trial of recent years with three of the past four Epsom victors taking in this race before going on to Derby glory the following month.
Wednesday (Tattersalls Musidora Stakes Day)
The highlight on the opening day is the Musidora Stakes run over 1m 2½f for fillies, this Group 3 race is a recognised Oaks trial with many Oaks hopefuls running here in order to get them ready for Epsom the following month.
On the same day the Duke of York Stakes plays a supporting role to the Musidora. A sprint race run over 6f this Group 2 race is always well contested by some of the best seasoned sprinters in training.
Thursday (totesport Dante Day)
The middle day of the meeting sees the feature event of the meeting The Dante. Run over 1m 2½f over recent years this Group 2 race doesn't always attract the biggest of fields, but what it lacks in that department it certainly makes up for in quality.
Being a Derby trial this race always has a massive impact on the Ante post betting for the Epsom Classic. Be sure to take winners of this race into account when selecting your Derby horses – three of the last four winners of the Dante have gone on to win the Epsom race the following month (Authorized in 2007, Motivator in 2005 and North Light in 2004).
Friday (Emirates Yorkshire Cup Day)
The final day of the Dante Meeting has the Yorkshire Cup as the showcase race. Run over a longer trip of 1m 6f this Group 2 Cup race is for four year-olds and older and sees some of the best older staying horses renewing rivalry year after year. A lot of past Derby hopefuls also are attracted to this staying race if kept in training.
