Sandown is a stunning racetrack in Surrey that races both over the jumps and on the flat. It's key flat race is the Coral Eclipse Stakes run each year in early July.
Run over 1m 2f this Group 1 race is an ideal race for winners and runners in some of the early season Classics in particular the Epsom Derby.
Being a month apart it provides enough time for Derby horses to freshen up and being run over a two furlong shorter trip than the Derby it can often suit horses that failed to stay the 1m 4f trip at Epsom.
The race is for three year-olds and older which gives the up and coming horses a chance to see how good they are against some of the best older horses in training at around this trip.
Recent years have seen the field cut up from the original entries with some short priced horses in the betting. However, only two favourites in the last 10 runnings have been successful as 2005 proved when hot favourite Motivator was turned over at odds of 2/5.
Top trainers Aiden O'Brien, Sir Michael Stoute and Saeed Bin Suroor have been well represented in the race winning the contest a staggering seven times between them in the last 10 runnings.
Last year saw another Stoute winner in Notnowcato take the race under a canny ride from Ryan Moore to beat the hot favourite and recent Epsom Derby winner Authorized.
