The UK General Election is usually held every 4 to 5 years and must be held by the end of the fifth year of the presiding government's term.
The 2010 General Election looks like being contested, as ever, by the Labour and Conservative parties. No other party has been in office without the benefit of a coalition since 1922. However, recent opinion polls show that there is a distinct possibility of the first elected hung parliament since 1974, which could make the 2010 election one of the most important in the history of the Liberal Democrats.
This will also be the first election for all three of the main party leaders; Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg. Brown assumed office on 27 June 2007 after the departure of Tony Blair, Cameron has been the Tory leader since 6 December 2005 while Clegg only assumed control of the Liberal Democrats on 18 December 2007.
