After running at Newbury in 2005 due to the £200m re-development of Ascot, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes is firmly reestablished Berkshire track.
With the recent success of the five day Royal Meeting in June racegoers will be really looking forward to this three day meeting where the feature race is run on Saturday, the middle day.
Run on De Beers Diamond Day this 1m 4f Group 1 race is one of the best races on the flat calendar, as always it attracts the very best top class middle distance horses in training from all around the world competing for the £400,000 first prize.
The race is for three year-olds and older of either sex. Due to this the contest is one of the few races that pits together past Derby, Arc, Coronation Cup, Oaks, and King George winners, as well as a whole host of other top class horses. Therefore it's always a major spectacle with the racing world eager to know who is the best middle-distance horse across all ages, sexes and countries of that year.
Horses renew this high class rivalry year after year and because of the high standard on offer the top stables from across the world are always well represented with the kings of Ascot Saeed Bin Suroor and Frankie Dettori always ones to note having won the Group 1 fives times in recent years.
Betting
In the betting the last ten years has seen the favourite have a particularly good record having been placed seven times, and winning on six of those. Although Epsom Derby horses often take their chance here it's generally the older horses (four year-olds plus) that come out on top with only Galileo doing the Derby/King George double in the same year in the last ten years.
The French-trained Hurricane Run followed in the footsteps of his dad Montjeu, who won the race in 2000, when taking the contest in 2006 as the 5/6 favourite.
Last year the 2006 Irish Derby winner Dylan Thomas, took the race as the 5/4 favourite for the all conquering Aidan O'Brien team before going on to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe later that season.
