About the Snooker World Championships
First staged in 1927, Joe Davis dominated those early years of the championships winning it 15 times - a record that still stands today and is unlikely to be beaten in the near future.
The event is staged at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield where it's been since 1977. Many players enter various qualifying rounds and tournaments in the hope of making it in to the World Championships.
Many sports fans have this two week competition as one of the highlights in the sporting calendar and with the gruelling format and prestigious history that surrounds the event it provides the ultimate test for all professional snooker players.
The final is the best of 35 frames (first to 18). Normally played on a Sunday in various sessions and despite the lengthy format it is watched by nearly 8 million viewers each year in the UK and many more across the world, with many finals proving too close to call.
In living memory Steve Davis made the championships his own winning it six times in the 1980's before Steven Hendry became the youngest ever winner aged 21 in 1990 and going on to win a further six championships in the 90's.
Ronnie O'Sullivan is the most exciting talent to hit the circuit in the 21st Century, with two World Championships in his haul of other titles, but he will do well in this current era to match the achievements of Davis and Hendry with the amount of gifted new players coming onto the snooker scene.
Some of these exciting new players can be found pretty high up the betting for the World Championship crown, and will be worth following closely this year and beyond. Current top ten players include 2007 runner up Mark Selby, Stephen Maguire, Neil Robertson and Ding Junhui, whilst hot on their heels are players such as Ryan Day, Ali Carter and Mark Allen.
The sport is getting more and more coverage each year and with the growing interest in all televised sports the betting industry in particular keep a close eye on this event with many big wagers and betting coups taking place over these two weeks.
