The Australian Open, formerly known as the Australian Championships, was first held in 1905. However, it was only in 1968 that the event was made open to professional tennis players; prior to that, it was only top ranked amateur players that competed.

Its venue has been at Melbourne Park since 1988 (having been previously based at Kooyong) - the grass surface was also replaced by hard courts with the move.

The Rod Laver Arena and The Hisense Arena are the main two courts in the park and remain the only arenas with a movable roof. This is a massive advantage as they can be closed when it rains or if it is extremely hot; with the tournament being held in the middle of Australian summer, this is of massive benefit.

Australian Open betting is often a competitive affair as no one player dominates the event: the men's tournament has only been retained twice since 1993 and no woman had won successive Australian Open titles since Jennifer Capriati in 2002, before Serena Williams did so in 2010.

Roger Federer won his 4th Australian Open in 2010, which drew him level with Andre Agassi in terms of Open Era titles. The most Austalian Open titles won is 6 by Roy Emerson; all of these were achieved during the Amateur Era.

In the women's department, Serena Williams won her 5th Australian Open; this made her the most successful woman of the Open Era.
