About the French Open
The French Open is the only one of the Grand Slams that is played on a slow clay surface, and is therefore often won by a clay specialist rather than the best all-round tennis player at the time. This is further backed up by recent years with former number one seed Pete Sampras failing to add the French Open to his massive haul of Grand Slams and number one seed Roger Federer so far also following this trend.
The tournament is held over two weeks and always captures the French nation's hearts and is viewed by millions more around the world.
The venue for the event is built on a 3-hectare site in the French capital Paris with the arena being named after a French heroic wartime aviator Roland Garros. The centre court which hosts the top men and ladies matches throughout the two weeks and then the finals holds well over 15,000 fans.
Both the men's and women's singles tournaments are played side-by-side in the same two weeks with the ladies event being dominated by Steffi Graf in the 90's and more recently Justine Henin winning four out of the last six years.
The men's event has not really been dominated by any one player with only a few winning it on more than one occasion. Clay-court king Rafael Nadal is however currently on a three-time winning streak and is the favourite again this May.
