10 GOLDEN RULES FOR ‘I’M A CELEBRITY…!’ BETTING
1. Men win
Five men (Tony Blackburn, Phil Tufnell, Joe Pasquale, Matt Willis and Christopher Biggins) have been crowned ‘King of the Jungle’. Only two women – Kerry Katona and Carol Thatcher – have taken the ‘Queen’ title. The evidence is clear – men play better with the audience at home.
2. Women lose – but do better than you think
The fairer sex might not win the ultimate prize, but they’re great back-to-lay selections. Five of the seven runners-up and nine out of 21 (43%) podium finishers have been women – so don’t rule them out completely. Tara Palmer-Tomkinson (2002), Sheree Murphy (2005) and Myleene Klass (2006) are the top examples of odds-defying females.
3. Age doesn’t matter
Two of the winners were nominally ‘young’ (Kerry Katona and Matt Willis), two were ‘old’ (Tony Blackburn and Christopher Biggins) and three were in the ‘somewhere in the middle’ category (Phil Tufnell, Joe Pasquale and Carol Thatcher). In other words, age is completely irrelevant when you’re picking a winner – judge the celebs on gender and personality instead.
4. Pin-ups finish in the pack
Nell McAndrew, Catalina Guirado, Jordan, Sophie Anderton, Kimberley Davies, Myleene Klass and Gemma Atkinson… seven series, seven eye-candy contestants and an average finishing position of – fifth (wow). Klass was the exception with her runners-up spot two years ago, but otherwise models are mid-table finishers.
5. The ‘love to hate’ figures stick around a while…Viewers love a pantomime villain… so for goodness sake don’t bet on Robert Kilroy-Silk to be back in the hotel first. Christine Hamilton, Jordan and David Gest all overcame initial public hostility to survive until the second week. Their average finishing position was a respectable fourth.
6. … but get booted out eventually
That doesn’t mean you should back contestants who win over the public, however. Jordan was a hate figure before showing her softer side…. but she still finished fifth. David Gest was poked fun at and then loved… but came, wait for it, fourth. Exceeding expectations is one thing; winning is another
7. Arguments cost votes
Tiffs and tantrums are great to watch…. but in the end, celebrities who love a dust-up get booted off. Rhona Cameron, Nigel Benn, Janet Street-Porter and Janice Dickinson all relished ding-dongs around the fire… but none of them won. The minute the sparks start flying, get laying.
8. Jungle romances are a turn-off
Smooching by the camp fire is a bona-fide vote loser. Jordan and Peter Andre were sweet for about five minutes; Vic Reeves and Nancy Sorrell was a jungle disaster from the word go; and Cerys Matthews and Marc Bannerman’s sweet nothings got them nowhere. When the romance starts, the winning stops.
9. Single celebrities are a turn-on
All the winners have been one hundred per cent single in the jungle, whatever their situation back home. Look through the list of winners, and you’ll see none of them has even the slightest romantic glint in their eye. That’s just the way the viewers like it. The celebs who steer clear of flirting, winking and innuendo are the ones you want to back.
10. Comedy rules
If you make the public laugh, you’re half-way to victory. Tufnell, Pasquale and Biggins all got the balance absolutely spot-on – none of them took the ‘Jungle’ experience too seriously, all three avoided petty dramas and instead focused on keeping camp-mates happy. Making ‘em laugh is a guaranteed formula for success.
