Amanda Perrett has made a good start to the Flat season and TUNGSTEN STRIKE, who won at this venue on seasonal return 12 months ago under Darryll Holland, can repeat the trick, with drying ground right up his street.

I’m a big fan of Ed Dunlop‘s AL KHALEEJ and despite him being favourite for this race, I am very sweet on his chance. Mightily impressive in romping home at Kempton on seasonal return, this has been the target ever since and he’s got no excuses on the draw from box 13.

Brian Ellison won’t be present at Ascot due to the fact that he’s having a kidney operation but I know he fancies HUE to run a big race in the staying handicap. Brian’s horses are in fantastic form at present and the booking of Kerrin McEvoy is a positive sign for this consistent 7yo.

NOSFERATU has sneeked in at the bottom of the weights although 5lb out of the handicap, Howard Johnson’s unexposed hurdler could have been underestimated by the assessor. He absolutely sluiced up on fast ground at Wetherby last time where he travelled like a horse with a big future and it will be quite a surprise if he doesn’t turn out to be much better than his current mark.

CHANTACO was a touch disappointing against some quality novices at Cheltenham last time but he’s unexposed enough to be worth another chance especially now running in a handicap for the first time. He is blessed with plenty of speed so this Flat track will suit and the big field should enable him to settle better.

Andrew Balding has high hopes for AMANJENA and this will tell him much more in terms of whether his filly is worth her place in the Oaks line-up at Epsom. Ultra impressive when hacking up in a handicap at Kempton last time, her turf efforts have been less spectacular so far, but she’s not yet had the sound surface she needs. There will be no excuses on that front here and she looks a good bet.

Lamorlaye-based trainer Richard Gibson has a good strike rate with his British raiders and his grey filly VERBA looks a good bet to land this Group 3 event. Impressive in landing a decent little conditions event in Maisons-Laffitte on her seasonal return in April, she shouldn’t have any problem with these quicker conditions and she’s open to a heap of improvement this year.
