The Ashes Odds
The biggest event on the cricket calendar, the Ashes series is a five match contest played between England and Australia. Over the years the Ashes has been billed as one of the fiercest and most competitive sporting events across all sports played between two of the games proudest nations. The Ashes Odds for the 2011 series in Australia are among the closest in recent memory.
The first ever Ashes test dates back to 1882 and is played every two years alternating in each country. The Ashes are held by the winning nation and to regain them the other nation has to win more test matches than the other when the Ashes come around.
The winning team is presented with the Ashes urn, which is alleged to contain a burnt item of cricket equipment (bat, bail, ball). Although they might then get to keep a replica, the original urn is always kept at Lords in the MCC Museum because of its frailty.
England regained the urn with a 2-1 series victory over Australia, in doing so gaining revenge for the 5-0 series whitewash of the 2006/07 series down under.
Andrew Strauss' side won the 5th test at the Oval by 197 runs to wrap up the series - it was also the first time since 1985 that England have won 2 consecutive Ashes series on home soil.
Now the Ashes 2011 series is upon us, when the Three Lions will head to Australia and try to retain the Ashes, which they haven't achieved since 1987. The stats are against England as they have lost every series away to their bitter rivals for over 20 years. As a result, the Aussies start as the favourites to win the Ashes.
